Where it began
The phrase spread on social media around 2022. It describes how inherited wealth dresses: the absence of logos is itself the class signal. It draws on American preppy and Ivy dressing and overlaps with what is called quiet luxury.
How it spread
After settling in the West it moved quickly into Korea and China. Uptake in Japan has been comparatively slow.
How to recognise it
Navy, khaki and undyed tones, natural fibres, knitwear and jackets without ornament. Suppressing the brand is itself the signal.
What it costs
¥15,000 and up — the most expensive category here, and the one where secondhand and past-season pieces pay off most.

Italy — cloth and cut
The same quietness, built from cloth rather than signals: the grain of cashmere, how the shoulder falls, holding to three colours. The absence of logos assumes the viewer reads fabric.
