Where it began
It points at the mood of roughly 1998 to 2004, when the world was preoccupied with the Y2K computer bug. Low rise, metallics, sheer fabrics. Around 2020 a generation with no memory of that period dug it up on social media, and the current version is theirs.
How it spread
Video-based social media set it off worldwide at roughly the same time. Of every style listed here, it is the only one that reads the same in every country and region.
How to recognise it
Low-rise cuts, mesh and sheer fabrics, metallic finishes, near-fluorescent colour. It assumes you are not afraid of being loud.
What it costs
¥1,500–8,000, the most affordable here. Fast fashion supplies it heavily, so similar shapes are easy to find cheaply.

America — replaying the 2000s
Wearing the era as it was: low rise, shine, tiny sunglasses. Nostalgia is the point.
Japan — approached from gyaru
In Japan it runs continuous with the memory of 2000s gyaru — more colour, more decoration. Less a reconstruction than a rebuild to current taste.
China — from the Avril side
The same decade, entered from the rock side rather than the bright celebrity side. Large ornate prints on black tees, rhinestone crosses, slim denim. The element most often named as essential is the large rhinestone graphic.
Korea — short on top, shorter below
Built on the ratio of lengths. The top stops at the waistline, the bottom is cut very short to lengthen the leg, then heavy boots are set against the exposed skin. Loose shapes are not used.
